Our Psychic Development is swimming along nicely. We have a nice mix of old and new students, so as a teacher it’s a challenge for me to come up with exercises that both groups can work with and benefit from.
I said to one of the regular students “I feel sorry for the new people!” because learning to work with your intuition and psychic faculties is not a linear process. The learning is in the doing. We are very used to learning by reading books, memorising facts and following a formula designed to lead to the knowledge of a particular subject.
This pattern just doesn’t work for psychic development. Students need to start where they find themselves and gradually learn to recognise the small, subtle voice of psychic knowing. They need to learn to listen to their intuition, and for most people, learn to recognise intuition when it occurs.
We are constantly picking up information about everything and everyone around us. Is it any wonder we have tuned it out? Imagine what your life would be life if you had no barriers between you and the next person. You would be swamped by their memories, their thoughts, their feelings. Not a very practical or satisfactory way to live.
So rest assured that the connection is already there. What we need to do is gradually, gently tune into that connection at an appropriate time and in an appropriate way.
People sometimes call me to ask about readings and occasionally say “Can you tell me something now?” as a way of ascertaining if I really have the ability I claim to. My answer is usually “No.” I might be on a bus, or in a shopping centre or otherwise engaged in my regular life or left brain activities. During a phone call from a potential student or client, I am in my left brain space. I have to answer the phone, answer questions, write things down. I simply can’t enter into deliberately intuitive space at the drop of a hat. It needs to be in a ’safe’ environment where I won’t have to perhaps drive a car five minutes later, or go into a meeting. I try and contain my psychic work to specific times and locations because that is the way that works best for my energy. Other readers may work differently. It really is very difficult for me to switch to an intuitive space in the matter of a few seconds for the purpose of telling the caller ’something’.
I am naturally very left brain. This should reassure the majority of people who are also the same way! If anyone wants to know how I work or what my ‘credentials’ are, they are welcome to request a one card reading via this blog or come along to a class. I feel very strongly about ‘appropriateness’ with regard to psychic work. Over the years I have been involved in the industry I have seen dozens of readers come and go. So often they shine brightly for a few months or a year or two, only to crash and burn feeling overwhelmed and wanting to get as far away from psychic work and people who want readings as they can. This is because they don’t have strong boundaries when it comes to how they do their psychic work and when they do their work.
Even from the beginning, I urge students to set their boundaries and have some structure in their readings. The reader is always in control of the reading, whether or not the reading is being paid for. Readers particularly need to set boundaries around time, what kind of questions they will and what style of reading they choose to do. Some readers simply view the cards and give their interpretation, other readers work more as counsellors or coaches. A good reader can give a useful and practical reading regardless of their style, but shouldn’t feel compelled by the expectations of the querant to be something they are not.
New readers need to decide what is appropriate for them and their style of reading and remember that they don’t have to read for everyone that asks and they don’t have to solve everyone’s problems.
