Spirituality v Violence
I don’t know about you but every time I read the news or watch it on tv, there seems to be more and more violence, bloodshed and terror around the world. How can this be when so many people are embracing spirituality and becoming self-aware? What happened to the idea of ‘critical mass’, where if enough people start to do something, it eventually slides into the mainstream and becomes commonplace?
The answer is simple. For every action there must be an opposite and equal reaction. So as humanity reaches up and grows spiritually, an equal number go the opposite way and engage in dispicable acts of cruelty and violence. You only have to look at the sexual violence against women in the the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the war in Darfur and the inhuman punishments and outdated, misognyistic laws in countries like Saudi Arabia to see the balance.
So what do we do? Stop growing? Stop praying? Stop working towards enlightenment and inner peace?
No. We keep doing those things while joining movements towards world peace, anti-violence, an end to hunger etc. We look towards what we WANT to see happen, not what we DON’T WANT.
The ultimate journey of the Earth plane and Humankind’s experience here is a return to ‘paradise’ - to peace and love - an end to war and suffering. We will each exist as a fully evolved being aware that we are all ‘God’. It’s still a long way off, but there have been many feet on the path before you and I and there will be many after us.
It’s easy to look away when a situation isn’t in your own backyard or doesn’t affect you personally. However I firmly believe that we are all responsible for each other’s wellbeing and one of the ways we can all take this responsibility by being a conscious consumer - not buying goods produced by slave labour, for example. Did you know that many crystals are mined by slave and child labour, after having a mountainside blown apart by explosives? Not very spiritual, is it. Did you know that many coffee farmers are in third world countries and are paid almost nothing for the coffee that you and I pay $3 a cup for every morning? Support the movement for Fair Trade.
Be aware of where your money is going. My investments are all in ethical funds - no investment in products such as cigarettes, weapons or activities that are destructive to the environment. Be aware of where your energy is going - do you focus on the negative or the positive? People you don’t like and things that annoy you or people you do like and things that make you happy? Whatever you focus on, grows.
Eventually, we WILL reach a critical mass where we will see an end to violence, suffering and spiritual ignorance. In the mean time we have to accept the opposite reaction to spiritual growth while we work toward peace on earth.
