Getting to know the Tarot Court Cards

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

The Court Cards are the ones most people have the most trouble with. Here is an easy exercise to get to know them a bit better.

Choose a couple of the cards at random, don’t worry too much about what they are supposed to mean.

Visualise yourself in the scene with the image on the card. Imagine what their name might be, how old they are, who their family is, what their concerns might be, what they are looking forward to, how do they like to spend their time? Create a little biography for each card, including as much details as you like.

Understanding the Court Cards

The cards that confuse most people most of the time are the Court Cards - the Page, Knight, King and Queen of each suite. They can be difficult to interpret in the context of a spread. For example, if you get the Queen of Swords relating to “Health” spread, what does that mean? Court Cards can represent people or situations.

If they represent a person, we can assume that the card represents someone about to come into the Querent’s life or it can be representing the Querent themselves.

The court cards can also represent a situation. Traditionally, Pages are delivering a message to the querant and the Knights can show “movement” or travel.

Each card is also linked with a star sign, for example the King of Pentacles is Capricorn.

Court Cards in tarot are the people cards - the Pages (also knows as Princesses), Knights, Kings and Queens.  Each suite has a heirarchy of Court Cards.

In Tarot 101, the Pages will relate to information coming to you, the Knights to changes in your situation and the Kings and Queens to people who are influencing you.  As you build up your knowledge and experience of Tarot, or attend our classes in person, you will learn other ways of interpreting the Court Cards.
